Denture Basics
Dentures have been the most common way of replacing lost teeth for generations but that does not mean that the technology behind them has not advanced over the years. Modern dentures are more durable and more comfortable than ever before and are generally made out of a combination of acrylic resin and metal.

Unlike other options when it comes to replacing lost teeth, dentures are not permanent. This means that they can easily be removed for cleaning, repair, or replacement.

Dentures are generally referred to as being either partial or complete. Partial dentures are necessary when an individual only needs to replace a few teeth that are missing while complete, or immediate, dentures are used to replace an entire mouthful of teeth. Both of these types of dentures are easily removable.

In many cases, an individual will need these false teeth because they have lost their natural teeth due to injury, decay, or disease. In addition to allowing an individual to eat normally, dentures also help to support the muscles of the face in the way that natural teeth do. An individual who has lost most or all of their teeth will find that they look much older than they actually are because of the sagging that occurs without the support of teeth behind the muscles. It is also easier to speak when an individual has teeth, which is another reason to replace those that are lost with artificial ones.

Proper fit is crucial when it comes to false teeth. Dentures that are not created specifically with an individual’s mouth in mind can be uncomfortable or even painful to wear. Fortunately, it does not take very long for a dentist to take the necessary measurements and have a custom fit set of dentures ready for an individual.

Of course, it will take a little while for person to get used to their new teeth, which may mean that they will have some difficulty eating or speaking until they are accustomed to them. If a person does not take their teeth out regularly to clean them, they may experience some soreness or irritation in their mouth.

It is very important to keep in mind that just because those teeth are man-made it does not mean that they can give up on making regular trips to the dentist once they have their dentures. Regular checkups and proper dental hygiene will still be necessary in order to prevent further issues and to ensure that the teeth themselves are in good working order.
